Although the original “Beginner to Bubka” received plaudits from all over the world, this edition is a major improvement. While the most obvious change, apart from the title, is the number and quality of the illustrations, the authors believe that the most significant improvements lie in the restructuring and rewriting of critical chapters. In addition, critical concepts have been clarified and key principles restated again and again in a manner that the truly gifted coach may find unnecessary, even boring. However we make no apologies for this not only replicates the normal processes of learning but emphasises a fundamental principle of training in this event – repetition, repetition and yet more repetition! Serious students of this challenging event will find the Petrov/Bubka technical model presented in the minutest detail. They will learn why it is the most effective model for pole vaulters at all levels of performance, how an athletes ‘style’ overlays their technical model, which in turn should be based on the principles of bio mechanics. Readers will also learn how to • Minimise risk in this challenging event • Introduce this model to young athletes. • Become a more effective instructor. • Select and employ appropriate drills. • Prepare athletes for competition. • Include field tests in their program. • Use sports psychology to assist their athletes. • Undertake the process of technical coaching. • Employ gymnastics in a training program. • Exploit the theoretical principles of training.
